Inevitably, it has the peculiar aesthetic, beauty, and subtlety characteristic of all Mahler’s works. Central to this work is a specific song recurring through the first three movements, and, in the final part, it bursts into bloom with the help of an angelic soprano – Inga Kalna. We will also hear a Concerto for bassoon by the somewhat obscure Theofanidis – his work is reminiscent of sacral Greek melodies and impressions from Bulgaria and other lands of the Balkan Peninsula. Solo by Latvia’s most renowned bassoon player Jānis Semjonovs.</p>
