From 2013 to 2021, Andris Poga served as the LNSO’s music and artistic director. In May 2022, Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski took up the position for three concert seasons, including 2024/2025 – under his leadership, the orchestra has delivered remarkable performances of works by Wagner, Sibelius, Mahler, Shostakovich, and other composers.
Vassily Sinaisky, who served as the LNSO’s principal conductor from 1975 to 1987, has been the orchestra’s Conductor Emeritus since 2017, while Kristiina Poska has been the LNSO’s Principal Guest Conductor since autumn 2021.
The LNSO has a rich history of collaborating with distinguished guest conductors and soloists, both in Latvia and internationally. Recent collaborations include Maestro Mariss Jansons, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Olari Elts, Maxim Emelyanychev, as well as violinists Baiba Skride and Frank Peter Zimmermann, accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, organist Iveta Apkalna, among many others.
In the 99th season, for the first time in the orchestra’s history, the LNSO appointed a resident artist – the former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the outstanding Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika. The following season, she was followed by cellist Kristīne Blaumane, and in the 2026/2027 season, they are joined by organist Iveta Apkalna.
In turn, the LNSO’s resident composers have been Gundega Šmite, Linda Leimane, Andris Dzenītis, Krists Auznieks, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Arturs Maskats and Pēteris Vasks. The LNSO’s resident composer for the 2026/2027 season is Ilona Breģe. The orchestra regularly commissions new works from other composers and is pleased to participate in premieres and recordings.
In addition to symphonic and vocal-symphonic performances, the LNSO is committed to engaging younger audiences through events such as the LeNeSOn concert series for children, the multimedia concert series Symphonic Hit with Goran Gora, as well as other, often interdisciplinary, musical projects.
LNSO musicians are active in various chamber ensembles, and each season features several concerts as part of the LNSO chamber music series.
Since 2015, the orchestra has hosted the LNSO Summer Festival at regional concert halls across Latvia, providing an end-of-summer musical celebration for families and friends.
