From 2013 to 2021, the LNSO’s Artistic Director and Chief Conductor was Andris Poga, who has continued his collaboration with the orchestra as Artistic Advisor since the end of his tenure. From 2022, Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski served as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor for three seasons, subsequently becoming the LNSO’s Conductor Laureate. Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska has served as the orchestra’s Chief Guest Conductor since autumn 2021.
The LNSO has an extensive history of performing with distinguished guest conductors and soloists both in Latvia and abroad. Among them are Principal Guest Conductor and LNSO Honorary Conductor Vassily Sinaisky, Mariss Jansons, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Olari Elts, Maxim Emelyanychev, Klaus Mäkelä, Jorma Panula and Modestas Pitrenas, as well as violinists Baiba Skride, Christian Tetzlaff and Vineta Sareika, accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, organist Iveta Apkalna and many others.
The LNSO maintains a close creative partnership with the State Choir Latvija, presenting several major joint programmes each season.
The LNSO’s artists-in-residence have included distinguished Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika and cellist Kristīne Blaumane. In the 2026/27 season, the orchestra’s Artist in Residence is organist Iveta Apkalna.
The LNSO’s composers-in-residence have included Gundega Šmite, Linda Leimane, Andris Dzenītis, Krists Auznieks, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Arturs Maskats and Pēteris Vasks. In the 2026/27 season, the orchestra’s Composer in Residence is Ilona Breģe. The LNSO regularly commissions new works from other composers and takes an active role in their premieres and recordings.
Alongside its performances of symphonic and choral-symphonic repertoire, an important part of the LNSO’s work is dedicated to children and young audiences. These include the LeNeSOn series of musical theatre concerts and the multimedia concert series Symphonic Hits with Goran Gora, as well as a range of chamber-style interdisciplinary musical projects.
The musicians of the LNSO are also active in various chamber ensembles, and each season the orchestra presents several concerts as part of its dedicated LNSO Chamber Music Series.
Since 2015, at the end of each summer, the LNSO has hosted the LNSO Summer Festival in concert halls across Latvia’s regions.
