Henrik Ibsen’s 155-year-old story of the daring Peer Gynt wasting the love of the faithful Solveig continues to inspire to this day. At the time, Ibsen himself asked Grieg to write music for the play, and the composer reluctantly agreed. Ironically, the result is one of the most widely recognised symphonic scores of our time.
On the eve of the 20th century, the British composer Edward Elgar creates 14 Enigma Variations – an extended opus based on an original theme, consisting of reflections on the topic of variations that portray the composer himself and his close acquaintances. The title of the work is as veiled as its explanation in the dictionary.
Meanwhile, composer Kristaps Pētersons has prepared a new work – a concerto in which the flute and the double bass, the highest and the lowest sounding instruments in the orchestra, engage in a dialogue.
