In this programme, the LNSO percussionists will surprise audiences with just how rich in timbre and possibility the world of percussion instruments can be. On stage there will be timpani, two entire drum kits, the bony sound of the marimba, ringing vibraphones, wooden boxes, and a whole heap of mysterious devices designed for games of rhythm, motif and mood. We will hear the New York mathematical minimalist Steve Reich, a marvel for timpani by Frédéric Macarez, an iconic composition by the world-famous Estonian genius Arvo Pärt, and we will be especially curious to hear Rihards Zaļupe’s music for the film “The Amulet of Nameyis”, which the composer has arranged for himself and his talented colleagues – the LNSO percussion section – in which he himself will also perform.
