The festivalČello Cēsiswill be opened on 13 June by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra under the conductor Jānis Liepiņš, with the German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt (Nicolas Altstaedt), one of the most striking cellists of the younger generation in the world today, as soloist. Nicolas Altstaedt is not only a brilliant musician but, since 2011, also artistic director of the renowned Lockenhaus chamber music festival in Austria, having inherited the post from his predecessor and musical kindred spirit Gidon Kremer. The concert forms part of the EMC conference in Cēsis.
A new and unique music festival – the international cello festival “Čello Cēsis”. Its artistic concept comes from the cellist Jānis Laurs, founder and artistic director of the international Adelaide Cello Festival in Australia. The aim of the festival is to show the possibilities of one of the most popular of all instruments, the cello, and its unique voice – in concerts given by outstanding cellists from around the world and by young musicians alike, in masterclasses, and in a demonstration of cello making. The first international cello festival “Čello Cēsis” brings together musicians from Latvia, Germany, Switzerland, Finland and Australia – the German cellists Nicolas Altstaedt and Florian Rohn, the Finn Marko Ylönen, Jānis Laurs from Australia, Gunta Ābele from Switzerland, the Dream team cello section of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the Latvian cello pop group DaGamba. Cello making will be presented by the German masters of the firm Betchet&Konig.
