The idea of a festival for the symphony orchestras of the Baltic States came from our Lithuanian colleagues, and we salute it as a truly splendid one. How else are we to learn what is happening next door, when we ourselves are so often too busy to travel to Tallinn or Vilnius! Now Tallinn and Vilnius will come to us, and we will go to them. And here is the Lithuanian offering: Ravel’s so-called “Concerto for the Left Hand” with Vestards Šimkus as soloist, the sunlit pine woods of childhood painted in sound by Čiurlionis, and Stravinsky’s springtime orgies in the wildest depths of Russia.
