Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is the great measure of Russian professional musical culture – impeccable, exacting, inventive, master of orchestral colour down to its last nuance. Everyone knows Rimsky-Korsakov the composer, but does everyone remember that he once trained as a sailor and sailed almost the whole way around the world? Memories of the sea’s mesmerising waves and the impressions the composer gathered from reading the famous “Tales of the 1001 Nights” came together in the great symphonic canvas “Scheherazade”, which offers us the wonders of the Orient, wild festivities and an even wilder symphonic storm.
