The Brahms cycle closes with the Second Symphony, the one most filled with hushed sunlight, tenderness and calm. Before it, Beethoven. Into the overture “Egmont” the composer could pour his admiration for Goethe and his enthusiasm for Egmont’s own sacrifice in the name of his people’s freedom. In the First Piano Concerto we meet a young Beethoven still very much in a Mozartian frame of mind – newly arrived in the great city of Vienna from the small town of Bonn, radiant and as yet unembittered, a much-liked improviser in aristocratic salons and a composer inspired by his first successes.
