Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony is often called the “Tragic”. No one is quite certain how the title came about, though most believe the composer gave it himself. Many of Mahler’s works are full of contrasts, yet the Sixth Symphony seems especially changeable, and its closing pages keep a surprise in reserve. Mahler’s Sixth is not a frequent visitor to the world’s concert halls, and the LNSO’s performance will certainly interest more than just the sworn Mahlerians. Before the Mahler – “Quattro temperamenti d’amore” by Gundaris Pone, the shrewd and dapper Latvian modernist of New York and Venice, which wreathes Petrarch’s beautiful sonnets in a language that is almost that of Romanticism.
