Imants Kalniņš says of his Fifth: “The music of the symphony is a road from uncertainty to harmony.” In this intense score, written at the end of the 1970s, the folk song “Caur sidraba birzi gāju” (“I Walked Through a Silver Grove”) rings out in the fourth movement with startling force – hymn-like, even jubilant. Silver gleams, and at the same time something fierce smoulders underground. As it was then, so it still is now.
