An inhabitant of juniper-clad Hiiumaa island, Tüür in his Fourth Symphony depicts magma – molten rock seething in the depths of the Earth (and of other planets too). Tüür says that the tension in his work gathers between a mass of dark granite and a translucent cloud of crystalline lattices. This is a breathtaking symphonic adventure in which percussion plays an enormous part, and in the Riga performance the superbly schooled, outstanding soloist Guntars Freibergs will take charge of it. For balance – Schumann’s Fourth Symphony as a bright echo of Classicism in the age of Romanticism.
