Petrushka (also known as Punch, Pulcinella, Kasperl) loves the Ballerina, but she prefers the Moor. Petrushka has his own chord, the Ballerina her pointe shoes, the Moor his turban. The Moor kills Petrushka with a curved sword. Petrushka’s ghost appears on the roof of the puppet booth and frightens the puppet master, the Charlatan. The audience is left in doubt – what here is real and what is not.
