The solitary, brilliant Mussorgsky wanders through an exhibition, looking at the drawings of his friend Viktor Hartmann, and in Mussorgsky’s mind a jumble of sounds is born, later transformed into musical miniatures – here is a Christmas-tree ornament shaped like a nutcracker, oxen yoked to a cart, unhatched chicks, gossip in the marketplace, a shudder in the catacombs, a bronze clock shaped like a witch’s hut, and the Great Gate of Kiev.
