Programme:

  • Ludwig van BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 1
  • Ludwig van BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9

The end and the beginning of a genius – two symphonies, two different Beethovens. In the First, he announces himself as a young, well-schooled and still-emerging revolutionary, at the same time bidding farewell to conservative canons; in the Ninth, he reaches the summit, culminates explosively, sparkles at the highest degree, dreams of uniting millions, and creates a hymn to unity and freedom. Just as passionately devoted to music as Beethoven is this concert’s conductor, the refined French maestro Casadesus, who will return before LNSO and affirm his life’s motto – “to serve, to dare, to give and to receive”. Music, in his view, is the purest path to the highest spirituality, and Beethoven would surely agree. A reunion of grandeur and human depth!

At 18.18, in the Pre-Concert Talk, Andris Vecumnieks and Orests Silabriedis will discuss the values of the young Beethoven’s First Symphony and the possible thematic and sonic interpretations of the mature Beethoven’s final symphony, touching on Schiller, deafness, and the desire to save the world.
