Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of the most sought‑after contemporary composers, whose music is commissioned and performed worldwide.
Among his most ambitious recent premieres are Lakes Awake at Dawn with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; Pleiades at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago; Shadow at the BBC Proms; Dreams Under Your Feet at the Leipzig Gewandhaus; Whispers of the Prairie Wind with the Utah Symphony and Utah Chamber Musicians; St Luke Passion with the Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Rīga; Arctic Night Visions with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra; as well as the impressive multimedia symphonies Northern Lights and Volcano Symphony, premiered in Latvia and subsequently performed around the world. In 2016, his opera The Immured premiered at the Latvian National Opera to great acclaim.
His works have been recorded by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, and Polyphony with the Britten Sinfonia for Hyperion; the Portland State Chamber Choir and the Vasari Singers for Naxos; the Latvian Radio Choir with Sinfonietta Rīga for Ondine; Elīna Garanča with the Latvian Radio Choir for Deutsche Grammophon; ORA Singers for Harmonia Mundi; VOCES8 for Decca Classics; The Crossing for New Focus; the Choir of Merton College, Oxford, for Delphian; the Pacific Lutheran University Choir of the West; the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin; the National Youth Choir of Scotland for Signum; and many others.
After studying at the Theological Seminary of the Union of Baptist Churches in Latvia and the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, he became a member of the State Choir Latvija. He later served as Composer‑in‑Residence at Trinity College, University of Cambridge (2011–2013). Since then, Ēriks Ešenvalds has received numerous awards for his work and continues to compose and teach both in Latvia and abroad.
