Rachmaninoff gazes out across the vast expanses of Russia. His Second Piano Concerto is the symbol of a composer reborn after a creative crisis – beautiful, deeply breathing, broadly surging. Nielsen stands on the shore of the North Sea and speaks on a similar scale – his symphony carries the subtitle “The Inextinguishable”, and this work, composed during the First World War, tells of untiring vitality, an elemental will to live, a restless spirit of life.
