No sooner has LeNeSOns properly mastered the hoe and the spade than winter is upon us. What is left to weed, what is left to pick? No, no, LeNeSOns – a winter garden has a charm all its own. The very same Winter Fairy who dresses the heroine for the ball in Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “Cinderella” can also transform a garden beyond recognition – one gently snowy kiss, and the trees, the bushes and the paths are clothed in white robes tailored to measure, of a beauty beyond compare.
In Antonio Vivaldi’s cycle “The Four Seasons”, “Winter” is both bitingly cold and cosily warm – as when, snow up to your ears, you step into a room where flames are flickering in the fireplace. And here is a surprise: instead of the solo violin, Vivaldi’s winter will be painted for us by the brightly clattering xylophone, played by the wonderfully gifted Rihards Rauza from Rēzekne. Music lovers will remember him as the first-prize winner in the wind and percussion category of the “Inese Galante Competition 2014” among music school pupils.
Alongside Vivaldi’s “Seasons” – “The Seasons” by the Russian Romantic Alexander Glazunov, where winter is represented by such characteristic phenomena as ice, hoarfrost and hail. The Frenchman Claude Debussy will lend a hand in decorating LeNeSOns’s winter garden too, with “The Snow is Dancing”, written for his little daughter, and the mysterious “Footprints in the Snow”. Crowning it all is one more explorer of the seasons, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, whose winter music will carry us into a masked procession with fortune-telling, playful disguises and a boisterous snowball fight.
Helping LeNeSOns with the winter garden will be the well-known team behind the LNSO morning concerts for children – playwright Lauris Gundars, director Paula Pļavniece, video artist Austra Hauks and conductor Andris Vecumnieks. In all likelihood the splendid Agent will be there as well, having disguised himself this season, for reasons known only to him, as a gardener.
