The French “Les Six” is one of the most famous groupings in the history of Western music. Thrown together by force, these rather different composers nonetheless go together quite well, for their time is the 1920s, when after the First World War a wholly new age had begun in art. Away with the approximations of Romanticism and Impressionism – let us seek the truth of art in Greek clarity and the lightness of neoclassicism. It is a rare chance to hear in one concert not only the famous ones – Milhaud, Honegger and Poulenc – but also the lesser known: Durey, Auric and Tailleferre. Long live the arabesque, the nocturne and the goat!
