The second movement of Mozart’s 21st Piano Concerto is described as endless, time-stopping music full of beauty, but the sound world surrounding it is also woven through with subtle energy. This time it will shine in the light touch of Elīna Bērtiņa, a winner of international competition awards. Schubert, meanwhile, in his Sixth, tries out both Haydn’s and Beethoven’s manner of expression while forging his own style, whose core value is pronounced melodiousness. This year’s anniversary composer Pärt, in the title of his piece, ironically muses on what kind of beekeeper the great Bach would have made, and in the music too we will hear the sound of bees rendered by string instruments; yet quite seriously, with this work, back in 1976, Pärt announced the defining feature of his future style – tintinnabuli or the ‘little bells’ style.
At 18.18, in the Pre-Concert Talk, Orests Silabriedis will speak about Bach’s and Pärt’s achievements in beekeeping, about Mozart’s years of luxury and extravagance, as well as about the fates of Schubert’s symphonies.
