The divine and the worldly. The cosmic and the human. In his symphony, composed right after the Second World War, Honegger speaks of the conflict created by surrender to blind overwhelming force and the instinct for happiness, the longing for peace and the idea of divine refuge. Misfortune, happiness and humanity – eternal themes, says Honegger. Mendelssohn, meanwhile, reads Shakespeare and has fun in a forest where one can still meet fairies, sprites, bewitched craftsmen and young people head over heels in love.
