Jānis Semjonovs – bassoon
Inga Kalna – soprano
Conductor Andris Poga
Programme:
· Christopher THEOFANIDIS Concerto for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra
· Gustav MAHLER Symphony No. 4
Although seemingly simple and traditional compared with his later works, Mahler’s Fourth is full of new discoveries and musical ideas, and it inevitably carries the special aesthetic, beauty and refinement present in all of Mahler’s works. This time at its centre is a song composed earlier, which runs through the symphony’s first three movements until, in the finale, it blossoms fully in the angelic soprano voice – this time, that of Inga Kalna. Meanwhile, we will get to know the music of Theofanidis, unfamiliar to many, through his Concerto for Bassoon, in which one can hear both Greek church melodies and Bulgarian and other Balkan influences. The soloist will be Jānis Semjonovs, Latvia’s most recognised master of this instrument.
