Modernism, national and ethnic identity, and a direct, unmediated connection with the listener are the threads that unite these four very different works. PLAKIDIS’s “Romantic Music” is a vivid and seminal example of Latvian neo-Romanticism. Hindemith’s Clarinet Quintet consists of varied, witty miniatures in which the composer plays with time, tempo and musical character. SCHOENFIELD’s Trio, inspired by Eastern European Hasidic melodies, at once recalls a dance, a prayer and a march. COPLAND’s Sextet is a colourful chamber-music masterpiece in which the freedom and vitality of the composer’s characteristic American sound are combined with refined musical construction.
