In this programme the LNSO’s string players come together – warm violins, dusky violas and mellow cellos. There will be no conductor; his place will be taken by the leader of the performance, LNSO concertmaster – that is, first violin – Georgs Sarkisjans, who has held this high and honourable post since the end of the summer of 2015.
Georgs gained his outstanding violin technique at the Dārziņš School and the Düsseldorf Academy of Music, and he has wide experience as an orchestral player and soloist, in chamber music and in teaching. Georgs Sarkisjans is a brilliantly gifted violinist with a modern European view of music, which is why the Baroque and Classical works in the concert on 18 December are certain to shine in a witty, contemporary reading that at the same time observes the rules of style.
The December mood calls for classic and much-loved values, and among these is undoubtedly the “Christmas Concerto” by Arcangelo Corelli, protégé of the Roman cardinal and patron of the arts Pietro Ottoboni – a work in the finest traditions of the Italian Baroque.
The golden flute passages of our splendid colleague Dita Krenberga, principal flute of the LNSO, will adorn the performance of Mozart’s First Flute Concerto, while that humorous sage Papa Haydn will be represented by the lightly sparkling Symphony No. 64, which bears the nickname Tempora mutantur, reminding us that times change and we change with them.
And finally, this year’s great anniversary composer – the cornerstone of Danish national musical culture, Carl Nielsen, and his Suite for Strings, Op. 1, in which the popular waltz shows us the grace of the dance and the finale a high-spirited Bacchic feast.
This concert will appeal to everyone who considers themselves a modern person with respect for tradition, a broad outlook, refined taste and the ability to be carried away like a child when the bright textures of Mozart and Haydn heighten the festive mood.
