Kalev KULJUS — oboe
Conductor Kristīna POSKA
Programme:
Erki Svens TĪRS — Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra
Franz SCHUBERT — Symphony No. 9
The internationally highly acclaimed sound of oboist Kalevs KULJUSS is so unique that the Estonian composer Erki Svens Tīrs created his Oboe Concerto specifically for him. Describing the piece, Tīrs compares it to a slow awakening from a dream in which the soloist gradually becomes aware of what is happening around. It is music in which a fragile, meditative timbre intertwines with an increasingly intense inner motion.
Conductor Kristīna POSKA believes that the conductor’s task is to help the soloist achieve the fullest possible self‑expression. Under her direction the concert will also feature Franz SCHUBERT’s Symphony No. 9, known by the epithet “the Great”. The monumental work combines SCHUBERT’s characteristic lyricism with grand musical scope and, in its ending, surprises with a reference to BEETHOVEN’s “Ode to Joy”.
