We are delighted to welcome an outstanding guest – one of the world’s most virtuosic violinists, Frank Peter Zimmermann, who will shine in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. The concert will be crowned by Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem “Also sprach Zarathustra”, whose opening theme everyone will recognise – whether from Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”, an Elvis Presley concert of the 1970s, or perhaps from “Toy Story” or a WALL-E scene. The concert opens with a new work by Gundega Šmite, the LNSO’s season composer-in-residence. Living in Greece, she encounters the mythical goddess of dawn, Eos, and bases her work on the illumination of dawn and myths about truly seeing the light.
