“MASTERS AND MASTERPIECES” SHOSTAKOVICH – JESTER AND VISIONARY
Friday
19:00
Venue Lielā ģilde, Amatu iela, Central District, Riga, Latvia

Shostakovich’s life is a forever unfathomable mystery, in which the mischievous joy of youth borders on the deep tragedy of his mature years and the calm enlightenment of his final days. This programme brings together two utterly different works – a daring, witty piano concerto composed by a supremely talented young man (seemingly tailor-made for Plamena Mangova’s fiery temperament), and a monumental canvas of life’s drama, the Fourth Symphony, created by a still-young man who had suffered a heavy professional blow, and which waited many years in a drawer before finally being performed.

At 6.18 pm at the Munster Hall the traditional “Pre-concert Talks” will take place, in which art and life in Soviet Russia in the 1920s and 1930s will be discussed by Orests Silabriedis and Latvian Radio 1 commentator Eduards Liniņš.
