LNSO’s celebration of wind instrumentalists opens with Beethoven’s Rondino – a charming and wittily orchestrated miniature composed by a 22-year-old under Mozart’s influence. The lion’s share of the programme is taken up by Richard Strauss’s Second Sonatina, which is in fact a lively, colourful and dazzlingly masterful symphony that the wisdom-of-age Strauss dedicated to Mozart’s immortal spirit during the Second World War. Meanwhile, Jēkabs Nīmanis is writing a new work, with text by the great 2019 anniversary honouree, linguist and language genius Uldis Bērziņš (1944).
