Hypnotic natural landscapes, the ascetic core of folk music, soul and subconscious – such is the foundation of this year’s jubilarian Tõnu Kõrvits’s poetic and captivating music. We will hear Tõnu’s contemplative variations on the beautiful motifs of works by the English Renaissance composer John Dowland. The programme also includes Pēteris Vasks’s tribute to the highest power – love – in his work Vox amoris, one of the composer’s most beautiful and expansive works, with the young Estonian National Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Triin Ruubel performing the solo part. The second half of the concert brings the Symphony No. 3 by the eternal child prodigy Felix Mendelssohn, whose seed is said to have been born amid the ruins of a Scottish royal chapel – overgrown with ivy and grass, holding memories of Mary Stuart’s wedding.
The concert will be performed by the combined orchestra of the Baltic Symphony Festival.
Before the concert, at 18:18 in the Munster Hall, in the traditional “Pre-Concert Conversations”, Orests Silabriedis will invite music historian Baiba Kurpniece to discuss the similarities and differences between contemporary Latvian and Estonian music.
