Felix MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY – Oratorio “Elijah”

An expression of true piety, or sentimental kitsch? An oratorio, or very nearly an opera? Inspired by Bach and Handel, Mendelssohn wrote for the Birmingham Festival a large-scale work for voices and orchestra that became the crowning achievement of his creative life. The false prophets are destroyed and Elijah rides up to heaven in a chariot of fire. The glory of the Lord is proclaimed in music by the work of human hands.
