More than 30 years ago, the Italian Enrico Onofri, together with like-minded colleagues, launched a new era in the performance of Baroque music – they established the Italian school of Baroque violin playing and founded the legendary ensemble Il Giardino Armonico. Alongside the Baroque, Onofri’s work as a performer and researcher also encompasses Classical-era music. Together with Sinfonietta Riga, he will take listeners on a journey through the pages of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music in which the Austrian genius indulged in charming mischief. “A Musical Joke”, for instance, is a masterful work that mocks the technical ineptitude of lesser composers in counterpoint and harmony, while in the manuscript of the rondo from the First Horn Concerto, Mozart included playful and blunt written remarks to his friend, the horn player Joseph Leutgeb. Onofri also wants to treat listeners to a Mozart gem rarely performed in concert – Galimathias Musicum (“Musical Nonsense”), composed at the age of ten.
