Béla BARTÓK – Piano Quintet BB 33
Sergei TANEYEV – Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 30
Highly praised by audiences and critics alike, the string quartet “3+1” continues to remind us of outstanding chamber music treasures that are heard all too rarely.
Béla Bartók’s Piano Quintet is a work of his youth, in which we see the hand of a young master but not yet the Bartók idiom we know today. The story goes that he was only just talked out of destroying the quintet, which for a long time counted as his most popular opus.
Sergei Taneyev’s Piano Quintet is a classic of the genre – a monumental, richly varied, almost symphonic model of chamber music, full of beauty and noble drama. Pianist Edgars Tomševics has performed with “3+1” on several occasions, while this will be the quartet’s first collaboration with the superb Sandra Jalaņecka, who appears in concert far too rarely.
