There is something Schubertian about the seeming unremarkableness of this bespectacled young man with ascetic features, which conceals a volcanic musical energy and a piercing view of life. When Shostakovich is 27, rather than departing this world like Joplin, Hendrix or Winehouse, he composes a concerto in which he indulges himself wholeheartedly, giving the pianist dizzying tasks and saturating the score with references to the music of masters from other centuries. Thrilling music!
