Dārziņš and Sibelius – it would be hard to find two composers whose relationship was quite so fraught with misunderstanding. A fateful misfortune befell Dārziņš because of his Finnish colleague’s “The Swan of Tuonela” – it was precisely this work that critics accused Dārziņš’s “The Lonely Pine” of imitating. Legend has it that the sensitive composer, devastated by such an accusation, took the score back from the publisher and, moments later, burned it in the flames of the furnace in Kazarov’s wine cellar. So we will never know how it sounded; all that remains to us is the exquisite, deeply lyrical “Melancholy Waltz”. And, through music, to reconcile the two composers who became unwitting rivals.
