The concert is dedicated to the milestone anniversary of the spirited cellist and phenomenal teacher, professor emerita of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and mentor to many outstanding Latvian cellists, Eleonora Testeļeca (b. 1937).
The professor’s beloved Ernest Bloch work Schelomo will feature as soloist the LNSO principal cellist Diana Ozoliņa. Also on the programme – Jānis Ivanovs’ Cello Concerto, known for its achingly beautiful slow movement, with the solo part played by Ēriks Kiršfelds, and the fiery Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova brings her exuberant Cello Concerto, performed by the principal cellist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Kristīne Blaumane. Word has it that the concert will also include a piece for cello ensemble composed especially for the occasion.
