The LNSO cello collective Dream Team has become a brand in its own right, and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra is proud of this “Dream Team” – the orchestra’s cello section, which for several years now has existed as an independent chamber music ensemble under its experienced principal, Grand Music Award winner Diana Ozoliņa. The aim of the ensemble’s programmes is to champion music for cello and to win listeners throughout Latvia.
To describe the programme the musicians have chosen, the word ‘impressive’ is almost too mild: here is the great Bach’s celebrated “Brandenburg Concerto No. 6”; here, for the first time, are two newly composed works, by the watcher of the hourglass Marina Gribinčika and the ardent romantic Rihards Dubra; here is the organ concerto by that witty forger of history Marģeris Zariņš (just imagine – an organ in the Great Guild Hall!) and, by the Mozart of Leipzig, Felix Mendelssohn, the Octet, brimming with youthful energy, in which the cellists are joined by several LNSO violinists and violists.
