Richard Strauss Tone poem Don Quixote

The festival gala concert will include the imaginative, impressive orchestral tone poem Don Quixote by leading composer of the romantic era Richard Strauss, performed by the LNSO and young German cellist Maximilian Hornung. The work is subtitled ‘Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character’, the protagonist is borrowed from Miguel de Cervantes’s famous novel, and thus the composition is openly programmatic: the music clearly depicts scenes from Cervantes’s novel, creating, in a way, a symphonic animated film. You will also discover the rich, broad sound of the cello in Adagio by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, interpreted by outstanding Latvian cellist Kristīne Blaumane.
