Christian Reif

Christian Reif is a German conductor internationally recognized for his expressive musicianship, innovative programming and versatile repertoire.

He is Chief Conductor of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden and has been appointed Music Director of the Wuppertal Opera and Symphony Orchestra, where he will begin his tenure in the 2027/28 season. Since 2022, he has also served as Music Director of the Lakes Area Music Festival in the United States.
Reif regularly collaborates with leading orchestras across Europe and North America, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, and SWR Symphony Orchestra. 2025/26 season saw his debut appearances with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Danish Chamber Orchestra, and the Australian Youth Orchestra.
An accomplished opera conductor, Reif has led productions of Don Giovanni, Pagliacci, Ariadne auf Naxos, The Rake’s Progress and Hansel and Gretel. In 2023, he won a Grammy Award for Walking in the Dark, the acclaimed debut album of soprano Julia Bullock, which he conducted and accompanied as pianist. He studied conducting at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and The Juilliard School in New York.
