On Thursday, 7 April 2022, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Janis Stafeckis, met with saxophonists recognised in Latvia – Oskars Petrauskis and the quartet Atomos, featuring Arvydas Kazlauskas (soprano saxophone), Aigars Raumanis (alto saxophone), Roberts Martinovskis (tenor saxophone) and Rudolfs Peteris Rubenis (baritone saxophone). Together with the “Symphonic Hit” creative team, the musicians prepared an informative concert programme dedicated specifically to the instrument often called the “king of jazz music.” Yet there was no shortage of academic works either, in which it plays the role of a striking solo instrument. Alongside Philip Glass’ Concerto for Four Saxophones and Orchestra, there was also a special event – the world premiere of Latvian composer Alvils Altmanis’ Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra.
