The Estonian musician rose to international prominence after winning First Prize at the 2022 Carl Nielsen International Competition and has since been recognised as a Gramophone ‘One to Watch’ artist for his effortless virtuosity and distinctive tone.
Aavik performs regularly with leading orchestras and conductors across Europe, combining the great classical repertoire with contemporary music. Recent highlights include a European tour with Paavo Järvi, Midori, and the Estonian Festival Orchestra marking Arvo Pärt’s 90th anniversary, acclaimed performances of Tabula Rasa at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Tonhalle Zürich, and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and his Carnegie Hall debut, where The New York Times praised his “astounding” performance and described him as a “natural Pärt interpreter”.
His 2025 debut orchestral album with the Odense Symphony Orchestra under Gemma New, featuring concertos by Bruch and Erkki-Sven Tüür, received a five-star review from BBC Music Magazine and was named Concerto Recording of the Month. Since the 2025/26 season, Aavik has been Young Artist in Focus with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn, while continuing his close collaboration with pianist Karolina Aavik and championing new music. In 2025, he received the President of Estonia’s Young Cultural Figure Award, was named Musician of the Year, and received the Cultural Award of the Republic of Estonia in recognition of his outstanding artistic achievements.
