Brīnums began his musical education at the Emīls Dārziņš Music School, initially studying choral conducting before turning to the double bass at the Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music Secondary School. In 1974, he graduated from the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied with Professor Mikhail Kurbatov.
Alongside his extensive performing career, Sergejs Brīnums has devoted more than four decades to teaching at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. Many of his former students now perform with leading orchestras in Latvia and across Europe. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to music education, he received the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and Swedbank Award for Best Teacher in 2014.
Widely respected as both an outstanding performer and an inspiring teacher, Sergejs Brīnums has made a significant contribution to the development of Latvia’s double bass tradition.
