Born in Riga, she regularly appears at the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.
A special place in her extensive repertoire is reserved for Carmen, which has become one of her signature roles. The New York Times has described Elīna Garanča as “the finest Carmen of the past 25 years.”
Among her most recent achievements are a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder at the opening concert of the Lucerne Festival with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly, as well as her triumphant return to the Bayreuth Festival as Kundry in Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, a portrayal for which Süddeutsche Zeitung hailed her as “the Kundry of our time.”
Operatic highlights of the 2026/27 season include returns to the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Bavarian State Opera as Kundry, as well as a return to the Vienna State Opera as the Princess de Bouillon in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur.
Garanča will perform the role of Judith in concert performances of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle at the Royal Opera House in London, as well as with the Munich Philharmonic in Munich and Baden-Baden, and with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in Monte Carlo and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Together with the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Garanča will embark on a concert tour of Vienna and the United States, performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. She will also perform Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder and Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival, and undertake a gala concert tour of Japan under the baton of Karel Mark Chichon.
Since 2005, Elīna Garanča has been an exclusive artist of Deutsche Grammophon. During this period, nine solo albums have been released, including Romantique and Meditation, both of which received the ECHO Klassik Award. Her latest album, When Night Falls (2024), explores the many moods of the night while paying tribute to her Latvian musical roots.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the art of opera, the Vienna State Opera awarded her the honorary title of Kammersängerin. Elīna Garanča remains one of the most sought-after opera singers in the world, appearing regularly in opera productions, concerts, chamber music recitals, and major international festivals.
