Born in Riga, Latvia, she performs regularly at the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bavarian State Opera, Berlin State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.
Internationally acclaimed for a wide-ranging repertoire, Garanča is especially renowned for her portrayal of Bizet’s Carmen, a role the New York Times hailed as “the finest Carmen in 25 years.” Recent highlights include acclaimed performances of Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder at the Lucerne Festival with Riccardo Chailly, and her triumphant return to the Bayreuth Festival as Kundry in Wagner’s Parsifal, where she was praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as “the Kundry of today.”
An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2005, Garanča has released nine solo albums, including two ECHO Klassik Award winners, Romantique and Meditation. Her latest recording, When Night Falls (2024), explores the many moods of the night while celebrating her Latvian musical roots. Honoured with the title of Kammersängerin by the Vienna State Opera, she remains one of the most distinguished opera singers of our time, appearing regularly in leading opera productions, concerts, recitals, and festivals across the globe.
