Ilona Breģe is a Latvian composer, pianist, musicologist, and Doctor of Arts, widely recognised as one of the most versatile figures in Latvia’s musical life. Her distinguished career encompasses composition, concert performance, music scholarship, and cultural leadership. Her works are regularly performed in Latvia and abroad and are admired for their symphonic breadth, masterful orchestration, and expressive musical language.
Breģe graduated from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, earning master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Composition before completing a Doctor of Arts degree with research on the history of the Riga City Theatre. Her scholarly publications, including Theatre in Old Riga and the encyclopaedic reference Foreign Musicians in Latvia (1401–1939), have become important contributions to Latvian musicology.
From 1983 to 1992, Breģe was a concert pianist with the Latvian State Philharmonic, touring extensively throughout Europe, Canada, and Asia while premiering numerous works by Latvian composers. She later served as General Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (1997 to 2006), founded the international composition competition Sinfonia Baltica, and was Director of Orchestra Rīga from 2006 to 2020, where she established and developed the international Windstream Festival. Since 2023, she has served as an expert for the Music Division of the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.
Her catalogue includes four symphonies, three piano concertos, six Riga Concertos, a Violin Concerto, the chamber opera The Living Water, vocal-instrumental works, and a substantial body of chamber and choral music. Her compositions have been performed by conductors including Andris Nelsons, Ainārs Rubiķis, Andris Poga, Normunds Šnē, and Guntis Kuzma, and by artists and ensembles such as Baiba Skride, Vestards Šimkus, Kremerata Baltica, Sinfonietta Rīga, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.
Breģe remains highly active as a composer. Recent highlights include the premiere of her Piano Concerto No. 3 in 2023 with pianist Vestards Šimkus and Sinfonietta Rīga under Normunds Šnē, as well as the first performance of her Symphony No. 4. As the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence, her contributions to the 2026/2027 season will include the vocal-symphonic work Gloria in excelsis Deo for two soloists, mixed choir, and symphony orchestra, as well as a new chamber work for organ and two percussionists.
Among her many distinctions are the Grand Latvian Music Award for her Violin Concerto, the White Sparrow Award of the City of Riga, and the Order of the Three Stars, awarded in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Latvian culture. A member of the Latvian Composers’ Union since 1986, Ilona Breģe continues to be one of the leading voices in contemporary Latvian classical music.
